The Wretched and the Earth, 2018

The photograph was taken in March 2018 in Bangladesh, in Cox's Bazar refugee camp, where more than one million Rohingya refugees sheltered in 2017.

The image portrays young people sheltering from the wind and sand in a makeshift tent, and was taken as part of the project "The Wretched and the Earth", which addresses the issue of the environmental impact of migration on the local territory and on refugees themselves.

Born in 1985, Gabriele Cecconi is a documentary photographer interested in social, political, humanitarian and environmental issues, whose research focuses in particular on the theme of the relationship between man and the environment. He approaches photography as a self-taught artist after he gained a degree in Law and in 2015 was selected by Leica and Camera Torino for a masterclass with Magnum photographer Alex Webb. In 2017 he started working for the first publications while in 2019 the project "The Wretched and the Earth" received national and international awards (Premio Voglino, Yves Rocher, POY, Stenin among others) and was exhibited all over the world in solo and group exhibitions. (Moscow, New York, Paris, Berlin…). He is also carrying out research into the relationship between culture, power and representation and is interested in the pedagogical and spiritual aspects of the visual arts.
