WFP - Programma Alimentare Mondiale
WFP fights world hunger
The World Food Program is the world's largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide
The agency provides food aid in order to fight hunger.
In emergencies, we get food to where it is needed, saving the lives of victims of war, civil conflict and natural disasters. After the cause of an emergency has passed, we use food to help people and communities rebuild their shattered lives. WFP is part of the United Nations and is voluntarily funded.
WFP was founded in 1962 and it envisions a world in which every man, woman and child has access at all times to the food needed for an active and healthy life. We work towards that vision with our sister UN agencies in Rome -- the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD)-- as well as other government, UN and NGO partners.
In 2013, we provided food assistance to over 80 million people in 75 countries. About 14,000 people work for WFP, most of them in remote areas, directly helping the hungry.
WFP main goals are:
- Saving human lives and safeguarding emergency sustenance.
- Providing food security, nutrition and sustenance in vulnerable areas following emergency situations.
- Reduce risks and allow people, communities and countries to stand up and be independent and to tend to their own nutritional needs.
- Reduce malnutrition and stop the intergenerational cycle of hunger.
WFP is voluntarily funded. Our main contributors are governments, but we also receive funds from private sectors and individuals.
