The Prize

Beneath the Swiss French border, 100m underground, University of Liverpool researchers are solving some of the mysteries about how our universe began! This is your unique opportunity to see behind the scenes at CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research and home of the Large Hadron Collider, with a leading Liverpool physicist as your guide.

You’ll travel underground to see one of the experiments on the Large Hadron Collider, visit the CERN Control Centre and get the low-down on the latest research into dark matter, antimatter and the fundamental secrets of Nature. There’s nowhere else on Earth quite like CERN – it’s where the world’s most curious minds come together!

Includes a three-course lunch in CERN’s private restaurant.

The Cause

The IntoUniversity North Liverpool centre in Anfield is a collaboration between the University of Liverpool, the LFC Foundation and education charity IntoUniversity. The centre will provide 1000 local young people each year with a programme of personal and educational support which will enable them to succeed at school and beyond. With the support of the LFC Foundation, and inspired by engagement with a leading Premier League football club, young people will be motivated to overcome barriers to their future success. Through visits to the University of Liverpool, mentoring from university volunteers and specialist input from university academics, young people will have exceptional opportunities to focus and develop their knowledge and ambitions. The centre, which is based at Anfield Business Centre, will provide weekly after-school academic support during term time, one-to-one mentoring and will work with local primary and secondary schools to provide programmes that nurture young people’s aspirations. The centre’s work is distinctive because IntoUniversity starts working with children as young as seven, supporting them over the long term in order to achieve a university place or another chosen aspiration.
