John Egerton Christmas Piper (1903 – 1992) was an English painter, printmaker and designer of stainedglass windows and theatre sets. He was educated at Epsom College and trained at the Richmond School of Art followed by the Royal College of Art in London. Although Piper is most closely associated with architectural subjects, the human figure appears in his work throughout his career and he is considered one of the most diverse artists of the 20th Century. He was an official war artist in World War II. Piper collaborated with many others, including the poets John Betjeman and Geoffrey Grigson on the Shell Guides, and with the potter Geoffrey Eastop and the artist Ben Nicholson.

This unbound complete set of limited edition prints was produced in 1977 for the book ‘India Love Poems’. The prints illustrated the set of poems by Tambimuttu (1915 - 1983). Tambimuttu was a Tamil poet, editor and critic. He arrived in London in 1938, and a year later he began to publish Poetry London, a small magazine that was to be important in the next decade.
