The funds raised by the Veronesi Foundation will be entirely dedicated to the Palm Research Project®, an international research and treatment platform dedicated to acute myeloid leukemia (AML). It is a very aggressive blood tumor: it affects children and adolescents, it originates in the stem cells present in the bone marrow and develops rapidly, spreading throughout the body.
AML is a disease that is not yet fully understood and the mechanisms that lead to the development of relapsing forms that are resistant to conventional treatments remain to be clarified.
For these reasons, it is necessary to develop new diagnostic tools and innovative therapeutic approaches, capable of responding to the most aggressive forms of AML. Among the most promising options available to us is immunotherapy with CAR-NK cells: a therapy with great clinical potential, in which we have decided to invest for the treatment of relapsed or resistant AML.
PALM Research Project is the new international network of institutes specialized in the oncology and hematology field financed by the Veronesi Foundation and coordinated by the Pediatric Hospital
Baby Jesus of Rome. The network's activity will immediately contribute to optimizing the treatment of children diagnosed with AML and pediatric patients in European countries that adopt the international protocol for the treatment of this rare haematological disease.
