Andy Warhol, fondatore e figura di spicco della Pop Art americana, nasce nel 1928 figlio di una famiglia russa in Pennsylvania. Ha iniziato la sua carriera di artista creando grafica pubblicitaria. Già nel 1956 presenta le sue opere grafiche al Museo d'Arte Moderna. All'inizio degli anni '60 Warhol iniziò a sperimentare diverse tecniche e iniziò a concentrarsi su oggetti tipicamente americani della società dei consumi, come ad esempio le lattine di zuppa Campbell o le bottiglie di Coca Cola. Nel 1962 Warhol iniziò con la sua serie di ritratti di star famose, come Marilyn Monroe o Elvis Presley, che erano allora all'apice della loro carriera. Il suo rinomato studio 'The Factory' è stato un punto d'incontro per artisti, attori e musicisti di successo internazionale. Già negli anni '70 le gallerie iniziarono ad esporre l'opera di Warhol, che oggi fa parte di alcune delle collezioni più famose, come il Modern Museum of Art di New York, la Tate Modern di Londra e la d'Art Moderne di Parigi.
