One Ocean Foundation, whose mission is to accelerate solutions related to ocean issues by inspiring international leaders, companies, institutions and individuals, promoting a sustainable blue economy and raising awareness on these issues, has launched an innovative reforestation project of Posidonia in the Mediterranean Sea.

The project plans to plant Posidonia oceanica with the aim of restoring the biodiversity of the Mediterranean seabed and re-establishing its ecological status. The project will make use of the scientific support of university experts and researchers and will be based on the use of innovative transplantation techniques with low environmental impact (coconut fiber mats).

Posidonia oceanica is a marine plant that grows only in the Mediterranean Sea and is strongly threatened by the consequences of human activities. It has a fundamental ecological importance as, in addition to forming extensive meadows that protect the coasts from erosion, it has the ability to sequester large quantities of CO2 from the atmosphere and store carbon in the sediments, helping to combat climate change. The P. oceanica meadows also represent a habitat rich in biodiversity, hosting up to 350 different species, including many considered to be at risk of extinction and highly threatened, which find refuge, a source of food and an area to grow and reproduce there.

Simultaneously with the planting activity at sea, One Ocean Foundation will activate actions on land to involve the local community through citizen science activities, with particular attention to schools and the new generations, to raise awareness of the importance of this species for the marine ecosystem of the Mediterranean Sea and, more generally, on the protection of the ocean.
