During this game on Januar 18, 1972 at the LA Forum, hometown favorite Jerry West hit a last second 20-foot jump shot to break the tie and win the game for the West.
Jerry West, also known as “Mr. Clutch” or “The Logo” is one of the most beloved American basketball players, coach, and general managers of all time, and spent four noteworthy decades with the LA Lakers. Jerry is considered one of the best shooting guards in NBA history, and was an All-Star every year of his career. He led Los Angeles to the NBA Finals nine times and left the game holding records for career postseason scoring and the highest average in a playoff series.
Subsequently he became head coach, then a scout, then GM of the Lakers and was at the forefront of rebuilding the team into championship shape by adding Shaquille O’Neal as a free agent and trading for Kobe Bryant. West then worked with the Memphis Grizzlies and Golden State Warriors, before his current consultant gig with the LA Clippers, leaving playoff and championship teams all along the way. West was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1980 as a player and again in 2010 as a member of the 1960 USA Olympic Team. In 1996, West was named one of the 50 greatest players in NBA history.
