In 1991, at the age of 30, Michael J. Fox was diagnosed with a severe form of young onset Parkinson's disease, news that he went on to make public seven years later, in 1998.
This event forced him to retire from the screen almost completely by 2000, but also led him to fight at the forefront of experimental stem cell research, later establishing the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
On March 5, 2010, the Karolinska Institute awarded him an honorary degree for his commitment to research.
