The Lions came up just short in their bid to follow in the footsteps of their 1997 counterparts by winning a Test Series in South Africa.
Gatland’s men put in a terrific performance to win the first Test 22-17 with Luke Cowan-Dickie’s second-half try sparking an inspired comeback. The men in red slipped to a 27-9 defeat in the second match of the Series as Handre Pollard kicked 17 points for the Springboks. A hugely-competitive and entertaining decider could have gone either way, with Ken Owens’ try and an inspirational performance from early replacement Finn Russell putting the Lions in a position to win. But it was South Africa who triumphed 19-16 courtesy of a late penalty from Morne Steyn, the same man who kicked the Series-winning points in 2009.
Second row Itoje was recognised by his peers after a hat-trick of outstanding displays alongside his skipper in the engine room.
Having incredibly recovered from a dislocated shoulder suffered in the 28-10 win over Japan at Murrayfield, Jones starred in his 12th consecutive Lions Test match to equal fellow Welshman Graham Price’s record, in what was the most capped international of all time’s 160th game.
Once in South Africa, the Lions beat the Sigma Lions, Cell C Sharks twice, and the DHL Stormers, only losing to an exceptionally strong South Africa A side packed with Springboks ahead of the Tests.
