Born in Zundert on March 30, 1853, Vincent Van Gogh created nearly nine hundred paintings and more than a thousand drawings, not to mention the numerous unfinished sketches and the many notes probably intended for the imitation of artistic drawings of Japanese origin. As brilliant as he was misunderstood when not scorned in life, Van Gogh had a major influence on 20th century art.

He began drawing as a child, and despite his father's criticism he continued to draw until he decided to become a painter. He began painting late, at the age of twenty-seven, painting many of his best-known works in the last two years of his life. His subjects consisted of self-portraits, landscapes, still lifes of flowers, paintings with cypresses, representations of wheat fields and sunflowers. He took inspiration from the landscape realism of the Barbizon painters and the ethical and social messages of Jean-François Millet.

After spending several years suffering from frequent mental disorders, he died in mysterious circumstances in 1890; the artistic value of his works was only recognized after his death.
