The Artist

Marc Chagall (Vitebskè, 7 July 1887 - Saint-Paul-de-Vence, 28 March 1988) was a Russian naturalized French painter of Jewish origin. He was a prolific artist due to his constancy and longevity. Chagall was inspired by the popular life of European Russia and portrayed numerous biblical episodes that reflect its Jewish culture. In the 1960s and 1970s, he was involved in large-scale projects involving public areas and important religious and civil buildings. Chagall's works fit into various categories of contemporary art: he took part in the Parisian movements that preceded the First World War and was involved in the avant-garde. However, he always remained on the fringes of these movements, including Cubism and Fauvism. He was very close to the School of Paris and its leading figures, such as Amedeo Modigliani.
