Star Wars is a franchise created by George Lucas that began in 1977 with the film Star Wars, retroactively subtitled Episode IV - A New Hope.
This film was followed by two more films, released three years apart: The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983).
These three films make up the so-called "original trilogy".
Sixteen years after the release of the last film, Lucas decided to shoot a prequel trilogy, consisting of The Phantom Menace (1999), Attack of the Clones (2002) and Revenge of the Sith (2005). In 2012 The Walt Disney Company bought the rights to the series and began production on a sequel trilogy with The Force Awakens (2015), The Last Jedi (2017) and The Rise of Skywalker (2019). There is also an Anthology series that includes Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) and Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018).
